Figures are typical 2026 ranges compiled for orientation, not quotes. They reflect surgeon and facility fees only and exclude flights, lodging, post-operative garments, medications, and any revision work. United States figures are broad national ranges and vary widely by market. Only a licensed surgeon can quote your case.

What a surgical quote usually includes

A complete quote from a well-run practice generally covers the surgeon's fee, the anaesthesiologist, the operating facility, standard post-operative garments, and a defined number of follow-up visits. What varies most between practices is how many follow-ups are bundled and whether post-operative lymphatic massage — commonly recommended after body contouring — is included or billed separately.

What it almost never includes

  • International and domestic flights
  • Accommodation for the full recovery window, which is usually the largest non-surgical line item
  • Pre-operative laboratory work and cardiac clearance where required
  • Prescription medications after discharge
  • A companion's travel and lodging, which some surgeons require for the first days after general anaesthesia
  • Medical travel insurance and any complication coverage
  • Revision surgery, unless a written policy says otherwise

Build the real number

Take the surgical quote, add two to three weeks of accommodation, add flights for yourself and any companion, add roughly fifteen to twenty per cent as a contingency, and compare that figure against a United States quote. The comparison still usually favours Medellin by a wide margin — but it favours it honestly, which is the only way the decision holds up later.

When you should not travel for surgery

There are cases where the arithmetic works and the decision still does not. If you have a medical condition that raises your anaesthetic risk, if you cannot take three clear weeks away, if you have no one to travel with for a procedure that requires a companion, or if the saving depends on choosing the cheapest quote you can find rather than the best-verified one, the honest answer is to reconsider. A complication managed five thousand kilometres from your surgeon is a materially worse situation than one managed at home, and no price difference fully compensates for it.

Reading a quote critically

A figure far below the typical band is the most common warning sign, and it usually resolves into one of three things: an item stripped out of the quote, a trainee or non-specialist operating, or a facility that is not equipped for the procedure being performed. Ask which of the three it is. A practice that has priced honestly will have a straightforward answer.
