A Brazilian Butt Lift removes fat by liposuction — usually from the waist, flanks, and lower back — and transfers a portion of it to the buttocks. Much of the visual result comes from the waist contouring, not the volume added. It carries a higher risk profile than any other procedure on this site and deserves proportionally more scrutiny.

Recovery, realistically
This is the longest recovery in the cosmetic body category. Sitting directly on the buttocks is restricted for roughly two to eight weeks depending on your surgeon's protocol, which means a special cushion and a genuinely awkward flight home. Budget twelve to sixteen days in Medellin at minimum. A meaningful share of the transferred fat is reabsorbed over the first six months, and a good surgeon will tell you that before you book rather than after.
Questions to ask before you deposit
Ask explicitly where the fat will be placed and what volume is planned. Ask whether ultrasound guidance is used during transfer. Ask how many of these the surgeon performs and what their complication protocol is. A surgeon who is uncomfortable answering any of these is telling you something useful.
Fat placement and safety
Fat transferred during a BBL should be placed in the subcutaneous layer only — above the gluteal muscle, never into or beneath it. Intramuscular injection is associated with fat embolism, the complication responsible for this procedure's elevated mortality risk relative to other cosmetic surgery. This is not a stylistic preference or a matter of surgical school; it is the central safety question of the operation. Ask your surgeon directly where the fat will be placed, and treat any answer other than a clear subcutaneous-only one as disqualifying.
Before you commit
- Confirm ReTHUS registration. Colombia's national health-workforce registry is the authoritative record of who is licensed to practise. Check the surgeon's entry yourself rather than accepting a screenshot.
- Confirm the specialty, not just the licence. A registered physician is not necessarily a trained plastic surgeon. Ask where and when they completed their specialty training.
- Confirm where you will actually be operated on. Ask for the name of the facility. If a hospital is involved, its accreditation is verifiable at the hospital level — note that standalone clinics and day-surgery centres do not carry hospital-level international accreditation, and any claim otherwise is worth questioning.
- Get the inclusions in writing. Anaesthesia, facility fee, garments, medications, follow-up visits, and any revision policy should all be explicit before you pay a deposit.
