Blepharoplasty in Medellín: Upper vs Lower Eyelids, Dry Eye, Recovery and Flight Planning

Eyelid surgery looks small on a procedure menu, but the anatomy is unforgiving. Separate upper-lid skin excess from brow descent, lower-lid bags from skin laxity, and cosmetic goals from eye-surface problems before booking.

Independent information, not medical advice. Verify the professional, the facility and the actual plan before paying a deposit.

Blepharoplasty is often marketed as an easy add-on because the incisions are short and the operation is localized. That framing can be misleading. The eyelids protect the eye surface, lower-lid position depends on support, and a low brow can masquerade as upper-lid excess. A useful Medellín consultation should identify the actual structure causing the concern before anyone recommends removing skin.

Four questions before eyelid surgery

Check 01Upper, lower or both?
Check 02Brow contribution?
Check 03Dry-eye risk?
Check 04Skin vs fat vs support?
Check 05Recovery & sun plan

What the consultation should decide

01
Upper blepharoplasty primarily addresses upper-lid skin and sometimes fat; it does not automatically correct a low brow.
02
Lower blepharoplasty may involve fat repositioning/removal, skin treatment and assessment of lower-lid support.
03
Dry-eye history, contact-lens use, prior eye surgery and eyelid laxity matter to planning.
04
More tissue removal is not inherently better; over-resection can create functional and aesthetic problems.

The point of this list is not to diagnose yourself. It is to make the consultation concrete: you should leave knowing what the surgeon thinks the problem is, what they propose to change, what they intentionally will not change, and what trade-offs the chosen operation creates. If you cannot explain the plan back in ordinary language, you are not ready to compare it with another quote.

Verify the plan before you verify the price

Medellín has a large cosmetic-surgery market, which gives patients real choice. Choice works best when you convert marketing claims into checks you can perform yourself. ReTHUS is the official Colombian health-workforce registry; REPS covers registered health-service providers and enabled services. When devices are involved, INVIMA provides additional product-registration tools.

#Question / verificationWhat to keep
1Confirm relevant facial/eyelid experience and ask for cases that match upper vs lower concerns.Write down the answer before you deposit.
2Tell the surgeon about dry eye, glaucoma, thyroid eye disease, visual symptoms and prior ophthalmic procedures.Write down the answer before you deposit.
3Ask whether an ophthalmology evaluation is appropriate for your history.Write down the answer before you deposit.
4Verify where the procedure occurs and who manages any urgent eye symptoms after hours.Write down the answer before you deposit.

What can change the operative plan

Whether the brow is contributing to hooding.
Upper-lid skin amount and symmetry.
Lower-lid fat prominence, skin quality and lid support.
Eye-surface symptoms and medication history.
How much social downtime you can tolerate versus true medical recovery.

These variables are why a package quote based on a few photos should be treated as preliminary. A formal consultation may narrow, expand or change the plan once the surgeon examines tissue quality, asymmetry, prior scars and medical history. Ask which parts of the proposal are firm and which are contingent on the in-person assessment.

Recovery is part of procedure selection

A useful recovery estimate has milestones, not just a number of days: when you can walk independently, shower, manage dressings or drains, sleep in a normal position, ride in a car, work, lift, exercise and fly. Those milestones differ by operation and patient. Build your Medellín stay around follow-up and medical clearance rather than an airline fare calendar.

The international-patient lens: facial surgery is detail work

Facial procedures are unusually sensitive to small differences in anatomy. That makes a remote photo consultation useful for orientation but limited as a final diagnostic tool. Ask what the surgeon can decide from photographs, what must wait for an in-person examination, and whether the operative plan could change after that examination.

Also separate social downtime from medical recovery. You may be comfortable appearing in public before swelling has settled, or you may look camera-ready while still needing activity restrictions and follow-up. Flight timing should follow the medical plan, not the day you feel ready for restaurant photos.

Make the quote comparable line by line

Ask for enough detail that two clinics can be compared without guessing. “All inclusive” is not a line item. If one proposal includes anesthesia, facility, garments and follow-up while another excludes them, the headline total does not tell you which plan is actually less expensive.

Pause before paying if…

  • The consultation never evaluates brow position.
  • Dry-eye history is dismissed as irrelevant.
  • Lower-lid surgery is sold by a package name without explaining support.
  • The clinic cannot tell you who handles urgent vision or severe-pain symptoms.
A useful second-read: If you already have a written Medellín quote, send the procedure names and line items. We can help you identify what is missing and what questions to take back to the clinic. We do not diagnose or choose a surgeon for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is upper blepharoplasty the same as a brow lift?

No. Upper blepharoplasty removes or repositions eyelid tissue; a brow lift changes brow position. Some people have one problem, some the other, and some a combination.

How much bruising is normal?

Bruising and swelling are common and variable. Your surgeon should explain the expected course and specific warning signs for your case.

Can dry eye get worse?

Dryness can occur after eyelid surgery, which is why pre-existing symptoms should be discussed before surgery.

When can I fly?

Use your surgeon's individualized clearance. CDC guidance for medical tourists specifically addresses waiting after facial, eyelid and nose procedures.

What symptom is urgent?

Severe pain, significant vision change or other symptoms your surgeon identifies as emergency warning signs should be treated urgently rather than managed through routine messaging.
