Breast Implant Revision in Medellín: Exchange, Removal, Capsule Work and the Questions That Matter

Implant revision is not one operation. It can mean exchange, removal, capsulectomy, pocket repair, lift, asymmetry correction, or combinations of these. Your quote should name the problem and the planned fix.

Independent information, not medical advice. Verify the professional, the facility and the actual plan before paying a deposit.

A breast implant revision quote that only says “implant exchange” is incomplete. The reason for revision changes the operation: size preference, rupture, capsular contracture, malposition, asymmetry, implant age, tissue thinning and a desire to remove implants entirely are different problems. International patients should insist on a diagnosis-first plan because surprise complexity is harder to manage when home is a flight away.

Revision is a diagnosis-first operation

What the consultation should decide

01
An exchange for size preference can be simpler than revision for contracture, rupture or major malposition.
02
Capsule management should be explained in plain language; not every patient needs the same degree of capsule removal.
03
Removing implants without replacement can reveal stretched tissue that may or may not benefit from a lift.
04
A replacement implant should be identified by exact device information, not a generic phrase like “premium silicone.”

The point of this list is not to diagnose yourself. It is to make the consultation concrete: you should leave knowing what the surgeon thinks the problem is, what they propose to change, what they intentionally will not change, and what trade-offs the chosen operation creates. If you cannot explain the plan back in ordinary language, you are not ready to compare it with another quote.

Verify the plan before you verify the price

Medellín has a large cosmetic-surgery market, which gives patients real choice. Choice works best when you convert marketing claims into checks you can perform yourself. ReTHUS is the official Colombian health-workforce registry; REPS covers registered health-service providers and enabled services. When devices are involved, INVIMA provides additional product-registration tools.

#Question / verificationWhat to keep
1Confirm the surgeon's experience with revision, not only primary augmentation.Write down the answer before you deposit.
2Ask what imaging is needed before surgery and what findings would change the plan.Write down the answer before you deposit.
3Verify implant registration with INVIMA and ask for device documentation after surgery.Write down the answer before you deposit.
4Ask what the surgeon will do if the pocket, capsule or implant condition differs from the pre-op expectation.Write down the answer before you deposit.

What can change the operative plan

Reason for revision and whether it is cosmetic, mechanical or symptom-driven.
Existing implant size, plane, surface, manufacturer and operative history if records are available.
Skin quality, breast tissue thickness and nipple position after years with implants.
Whether the new goal is smaller, larger, implant-free, lifted or simply more symmetric.
Whether additional procedures materially increase recovery and complication exposure.

These variables are why a package quote based on a few photos should be treated as preliminary. A formal consultation may narrow, expand or change the plan once the surgeon examines tissue quality, asymmetry, prior scars and medical history. Ask which parts of the proposal are firm and which are contingent on the in-person assessment.

Recovery is part of procedure selection

A useful recovery estimate has milestones, not just a number of days: when you can walk independently, shower, manage dressings or drains, sleep in a normal position, ride in a car, work, lift, exercise and fly. Those milestones differ by operation and patient. Build your Medellín stay around follow-up and medical clearance rather than an airline fare calendar.

The international-patient lens: your recovery has to work outside the operating room

A technically appropriate operation can still be a poor travel plan if the first week requires help you have not arranged. Translate the surgeon's recovery instructions into ordinary tasks: getting out of bed, showering, carrying groceries, putting on a garment, climbing stairs, opening heavy doors, lifting luggage and sitting through a flight.

Before surgery, decide who handles each task and where you will go if the recovery is not routine. This is especially important for procedures with longer incisions, drains, compression garments or upper-body lifting restrictions. A return ticket and a hotel reservation are logistics; neither is a postoperative care plan.

Make the quote comparable line by line

Ask for enough detail that two clinics can be compared without guessing. “All inclusive” is not a line item. If one proposal includes anesthesia, facility, garments and follow-up while another excludes them, the headline total does not tell you which plan is actually less expensive.

Pause before paying if…

  • The clinic will not name the proposed implant before a deposit.
  • Every capsule problem is described as requiring the same operation.
  • There is no contingency plan for an unexpected rupture or tissue problem.
  • The quote hides revision complexity inside an all-inclusive package without line items.
A useful second-read: If you already have a written Medellín quote, send the procedure names and line items. We can help you identify what is missing and what questions to take back to the clinic. We do not diagnose or choose a surgeon for you.

Frequently asked questions

Do breast implants have to be replaced on a fixed schedule?

Not simply because a calendar date arrives. Ongoing follow-up matters, and revision decisions depend on implant condition, symptoms, imaging, aesthetic goals and clinical findings.

What is capsular contracture?

Scar tissue naturally forms around an implant. Contracture refers to abnormal tightening that can change firmness, shape or comfort. Management depends on severity and the overall case.

Can I remove implants and not replace them?

Yes, but the resulting breast shape depends on your tissue, skin stretch, implant size and duration. Some patients discuss a lift at the same time or later.

Should I get my old operative report?

If possible, yes. Implant details, plane, incision, prior capsule work and complications can help the revision surgeon plan.

What device paperwork should I leave with?

Ask for the operative report and the specific implant/device identifiers provided by the manufacturer or facility.
