Travelers often arrive asking for upper blepharoplasty because the upper eyelid looks heavy. Sometimes that is exactly the operation. Sometimes the brow has descended and is pushing tissue downward. Removing eyelid skin without accounting for the brow can miss the source of the problem or create a result that feels incomplete.
Where is the heaviness coming from?
What the consultation should decide
A brow lift repositions brow tissues; upper blepharoplasty addresses the eyelid itself.
Some patients benefit from one procedure, while others may discuss a combination.
Technique choice for a brow lift affects incision location, hairline considerations and recovery.
The consultation should compare outcomes and scars, not simply upsell the larger operation.
The point of this list is not to diagnose yourself. It is to make the consultation concrete: you should leave knowing what the surgeon thinks the problem is, what they propose to change, what they intentionally will not change, and what trade-offs the chosen operation creates. If you cannot explain the plan back in ordinary language, you are not ready to compare it with another quote.
Verify the plan before you verify the price
Medellín has a large cosmetic-surgery market, which gives patients real choice. Choice works best when you convert marketing claims into checks you can perform yourself. ReTHUS is the official Colombian health-workforce registry; REPS covers registered health-service providers and enabled services. When devices are involved, INVIMA provides additional product-registration tools.
| # | Question / verification | What to keep |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ask the surgeon to show you the brow position they consider ideal and why. | Write down the answer before you deposit. |
| 2 | Request similar cases where brow lift and blepharoplasty were considered separately. | Write down the answer before you deposit. |
| 3 | Discuss hairline, prior hair loss, dry eye and previous eyelid/forehead procedures. | Write down the answer before you deposit. |
| 4 | Confirm credentials and facility before deposit. | Write down the answer before you deposit. |
What can change the operative plan
These variables are why a package quote based on a few photos should be treated as preliminary. A formal consultation may narrow, expand or change the plan once the surgeon examines tissue quality, asymmetry, prior scars and medical history. Ask which parts of the proposal are firm and which are contingent on the in-person assessment.
Recovery is part of procedure selection
- ASPS notes brow-lift wound healing may take around 10–14 days initially, with swelling continuing beyond that.
- Blepharoplasty has its own eye-surface and swelling considerations.
- If procedures are combined, use the longer and more restrictive recovery plan rather than adding two optimistic estimates.
- Build flight timing around surgeon clearance and your ability to manage swelling, wound care and complications away from the operating team.
A useful recovery estimate has milestones, not just a number of days: when you can walk independently, shower, manage dressings or drains, sleep in a normal position, ride in a car, work, lift, exercise and fly. Those milestones differ by operation and patient. Build your Medellín stay around follow-up and medical clearance rather than an airline fare calendar.
The international-patient lens: compare the entire obligation, not the headline price
A medical-tourism decision includes more than the operating-room number. It also includes verification, travel flexibility, postoperative support, records, possible extended lodging and the practical cost of getting help at home. Put those items beside the surgical quote before deciding what is actually cheaper or more convenient.
Keep the decision reversible for as long as possible. The closer a payment, flight or package locks you into one surgeon, date or facility, the more important it is that the underlying medical and contractual details are already clear.
Make the quote comparable line by line
Ask for enough detail that two clinics can be compared without guessing. “All inclusive” is not a line item. If one proposal includes anesthesia, facility, garments and follow-up while another excludes them, the headline total does not tell you which plan is actually less expensive.
| Line item | Record | Clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Which procedure(s) are included | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Technique | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Anesthesia | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Facility | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Sutures/staples removal | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Eye-care medications if needed | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Follow-up | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Revision policy | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
Pause before paying if…
- The surgeon never examines your brow position.
- A coordinator diagnoses the procedure from selfies alone.
- You are shown only dramatic combined cases when you asked about a smaller change.
- The recovery estimate is framed only as “back to Instagram” rather than clinical follow-up.

Can Botox replace a brow lift?
Neuromodulators can change muscle activity and produce limited brow-position effects in some patients, but they are not the same as surgical repositioning.
Will a brow lift change my hairline?
Technique can affect incision position and hairline considerations. Discuss this explicitly if forehead length or hair loss matters to you.
Can I do blepharoplasty now and a brow lift later?
Staging can be discussed. The important point is understanding how one operation may influence the appearance of the other.
Which has more downtime?
It depends on technique and whether procedures are combined. Ask for separate recovery plans for each option.
Should I send only front-view photos?
No. Multiple angles and an in-person or formal virtual assessment provide more useful information than a single posed selfie.
