A breast reduction consultation should be more specific than “what cup size do you want?” Cup sizes are inconsistent, breast shape matters as much as volume, and the operation must preserve blood supply while removing tissue and repositioning the breast. For a traveler, the plan also needs to account for wound checks, pathology, activity restrictions and what happens after you leave Colombia.
What a reduction plan must solve
What the consultation should decide
The goal may include relief from neck, shoulder or back symptoms as well as a smaller breast shape.
Surgeons choose technique partly around breast size, skin excess, nipple position, tissue quality and desired reduction.
Longer incisions can be necessary for larger reductions; a shorter scar is not automatically a better operation.
Nipple and breast sensation can change, and breastfeeding potential should be discussed before surgery.
The point of this list is not to diagnose yourself. It is to make the consultation concrete: you should leave knowing what the surgeon thinks the problem is, what they propose to change, what they intentionally will not change, and what trade-offs the chosen operation creates. If you cannot explain the plan back in ordinary language, you are not ready to compare it with another quote.
Verify the plan before you verify the price
Medellín has a large cosmetic-surgery market, which gives patients real choice. Choice works best when you convert marketing claims into checks you can perform yourself. ReTHUS is the official Colombian health-workforce registry; REPS covers registered health-service providers and enabled services. When devices are involved, INVIMA provides additional product-registration tools.
| # | Question / verification | What to keep |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Verify ReTHUS registration, specialty training and the actual facility in REPS. | Write down the answer before you deposit. |
| 2 | Ask how often the surgeon performs reductions, not just augmentations. | Write down the answer before you deposit. |
| 3 | Ask what tissue is routinely sent to pathology and when the report becomes available. | Write down the answer before you deposit. |
| 4 | Request a written plan for delayed wound healing after you have flown home. | Write down the answer before you deposit. |
What can change the operative plan
These variables are why a package quote based on a few photos should be treated as preliminary. A formal consultation may narrow, expand or change the plan once the surgeon examines tissue quality, asymmetry, prior scars and medical history. Ask which parts of the proposal are firm and which are contingent on the in-person assessment.
Recovery is part of procedure selection
- Incisions can heal at different rates, especially where vertical and horizontal scar lines meet.
- Arrange help with bags and daily tasks so you are not testing fresh incisions to prove you feel better.
- Ask when you can shower, sleep on your side, raise your arms, exercise and wear a regular bra.
- Know exactly how to send photographs and reach the surgeon if a small wound opening appears after travel.
A useful recovery estimate has milestones, not just a number of days: when you can walk independently, shower, manage dressings or drains, sleep in a normal position, ride in a car, work, lift, exercise and fly. Those milestones differ by operation and patient. Build your Medellín stay around follow-up and medical clearance rather than an airline fare calendar.
The international-patient lens: your recovery has to work outside the operating room
A technically appropriate operation can still be a poor travel plan if the first week requires help you have not arranged. Translate the surgeon's recovery instructions into ordinary tasks: getting out of bed, showering, carrying groceries, putting on a garment, climbing stairs, opening heavy doors, lifting luggage and sitting through a flight.
Before surgery, decide who handles each task and where you will go if the recovery is not routine. This is especially important for procedures with longer incisions, drains, compression garments or upper-body lifting restrictions. A return ticket and a hotel reservation are logistics; neither is a postoperative care plan.
Make the quote comparable line by line
Ask for enough detail that two clinics can be compared without guessing. “All inclusive” is not a line item. If one proposal includes anesthesia, facility, garments and follow-up while another excludes them, the headline total does not tell you which plan is actually less expensive.
| Line item | Record | Clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Surgeon | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Anesthesia | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Facility | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Pre-op testing | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Pathology | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Support bra | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Medications | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
| Follow-up and management of wound issues | Included / excluded / amount | Ask who is responsible. |
Pause before paying if…
- A promised exact cup size is treated as a contractual result.
- The clinic has no answer about pathology.
- The surgeon's portfolio is almost entirely implant augmentation.
- You are encouraged to smoke/vape less rather than stop nicotine according to the surgeon's protocol.

Is breast reduction the same as a breast lift?
A reduction usually includes lifting and reshaping, but it also removes meaningful breast volume. A lift primarily addresses position and skin envelope.
Will scars be visible?
Yes. Scar length and pattern depend on the technique and degree of reduction. The relevant question is where scars will sit and how your surgeon manages them over time.
Can I choose my exact final cup size?
A surgeon can discuss a target range and proportions, but cup sizing is not standardized and healing changes the final shape.
What if I have a small wound opening after I go home?
Ask this before surgery. You should know who reviews photos, when local care is enough, and when you need in-person assessment.
Why does pathology matter?
Removed breast tissue may be examined by pathology depending on local practice and your circumstances. Ask whether it is included and how results are delivered.
